you can calculate your descent by doing this: For example you are at 10000 ft and you want to descend to 5000 feet. At 30miles from your airport , you must be at 5000 feet.
THIS IS HOW TO CALCULATE: you are at 10000 feet. 10000-5000=5000. 5000 x 3(rule)= 15000. 15000 means that you have to descent at 15nm from the place where you must be at 5000 ft. so 30 miles + 15 miles = 45 miles. at 45 miles from the airport you have to start your descent. (vertical speed depends on your groundspeed)
